About the retreat

AMANA is the first retreat by Vai con (C)alma dedicated to women only: seven full days in Pipa, on Brazil's Northeast coast, for women who feel absorbed by routine and want to find their way back to themselves. It brings together surf, yoga, dance, art therapy, sound healing, an ice bath and a cacao ceremony, and each of these practices is here for a reason, not to fill a schedule. This is not a closed, silent retreat. It is a living experience. You go out, you walk the village, you eat in the street, you dance, and you feel this place by day and by night.

Pipa is a fishing village that became one of the most beautiful places on the Brazilian coast without losing its own pace. Red cliffs falling into the sea, beaches that change shape with the tide, and dolphins that come close enough to the break that you can watch them from the water while you wait for the next wave. During the day, the sound is the ocean. At night, the village fills with music, food and people from everywhere. We chose Pipa because Brazil has an energy that no brochure explains, you feel it on your skin, and also because the same week that gives you silence in the morning, gives you back joy at night.

AMANA is for women who wake up, get through the day and reach the evening without knowing where they went. For those who already know they need to stop, but cannot do it alone at home. For those who want to travel solo for the first time and would rather have the safety of a small group and two guides who made that same crossing. No previous surf experience is needed, no yoga, nothing. All levels are welcome. What is asked of you is openness and the willingness to take the leap.

It is also worth saying what AMANA is not, because that saves everyone's time. It is not a silent retreat of closed introspection: here you talk, you dance and you go out. It is not a standard tourist package, with a full itinerary and no care behind it. And it is not a wellness product promising a miracle in seven days. What the week delivers is real, and that is exactly why it is possible.

Three things distinguish AMANA from a retreat that could happen anywhere in the world. The first is the real Brazil: surfing with dolphins, learning samba from people who dance samba, eating tropical food made fresh, spending a free evening in the village. You are never just inside a room. The second is that every activity has intention: yoga works on presence, surf works on balance and courage, dance works on the body, cacao and breath work on what is inside. The third is that the week was designed for women who arrive alone. The group is never more than ten women, and no one is left out.

You arrive, meet the guides and the group. And from there, the days find their own rhythm. Some mornings you are up early for the water, others you sleep in and join later. You can take part in every practice or step back and rest, walk the cliffs, sit by the ocean, or simply do nothing for a while. There is structure here, but no pressure. AMANA gives you seven days to find out what your own pace actually feels like.

The week

Schedule is indicative. Surf sessions shift with the tides, and shifting with the tides is part of it.

Day 1 · Arrival and welcome circle

A circle for each woman to say her own name and what she came for, and a gentle yoga practice so the body understands the journey is over. Nothing else is asked of you on this day.

Day 2 · Yoga, surf and samba

First morning in the ocean. The surf lesson starts on the sand, with women who have never stood on a board, and ends with most of them up at least once. In the evening, a samba lesson: the body learns something else, and it is funny to notice how alike the two are.

Day 3 · Yoga, surf and art therapy

The ocean again in the morning, and the body already responds differently. In the afternoon, art therapy: you draw, paint or cut without needing to know how to do any of it, and what shows up on the paper usually says more than you expected. The evening is free for you to meet Pipa in your own time.

Day 4 · Yoga, jeep excursion and rest

A day out of the village. Jeep along the beaches and cliffs, the places you cannot reach on foot. Back with time to spare for doing nothing, and doing nothing here is part of the programme.

Day 5 · Yoga, biodanza and sound healing

Biodanza is not a dance class: it is the body moving with no choreography and no audience, which for many women is the hardest and most freeing part of the week. In the evening, sound healing, lying down, with gongs and bowls, and the body does the rest.

Day 6 · Yoga, surf and ice bath

The last morning in the water, and this time you already know what to do. In the afternoon, the ice bath: a few minutes of cold that teach more about breathing and about your own limit than a whole week of talking.

Day 7 · Cacao ceremony and closing bonfire

The cacao ceremony opens the heart and everything that comes with it, and it is where the week usually comes together. Then a bonfire on the beach, and the group that arrived as strangers says goodbye differently.

The practices, and what each one does

None of these practices is here because it looks good on a list. Each one works on something specific, and together they make the week.

Yoga · six sessions

Presence. Daily classes, adapted to all levels, most mornings and outdoors. No experience needed: the goal is not the perfect posture, it is you inhabiting your own body again before the day begins.

Surf · three lessons, with a certified instructor

Balance and courage. The ocean does not negotiate, and that is exactly why it teaches fast. Lessons for all levels, including women who have never stood on a board. Many discover something in the surf they did not know about themselves: that they can fall and come back.

Biodanza · one workshop

Body and freedom. No choreography, no mirror, no right and wrong. It is free movement in a safe space, and it tends to be the practice that surprises the most, because it asks less technique and more surrender than any other.

Art therapy · one workshop

Expression. You do not need to know how to draw or to create something. Art therapy uses the image, the colours, the forms as a path to what does not fit into words, and what comes out as a result is yours, to take or to leave.

Sound healing · one session

Deep rest. You lie down, close your eyes, and the sound of gongs and bowls does the work. It is the opposite of effort, and for women living at high speed it is often the first time in a long while the nervous system truly slows down.

Ice bath

Limit and breath. A few minutes, a lot of cold, and the discovery that the body holds and the breath leads. No one is required to get in. Those who do come out different.

Cacao ceremony

Opening. Cacao in ceremonial dose opens the heart and loosens the voice, and the circle that forms afterwards is where the week tends to make sense for everyone at the same time.

Samba lesson

Joy. Because being in Brazil and not dancing would be a waste, and because laughing at yourself learning a new step is inner work too.

Jeep excursion

The place. Beaches, cliffs and lookouts you cannot reach on foot, with the wind in your face and no set time to come back.

Where you stay

You stay at Pipa Park, an inn a short walk from the centre of the village, which means you can go out for dinner or a coconut water without depending on a car or on anyone. Eight nights, in apartments of two double rooms, with a single room available for those who prefer it. The rhythm of the house follows the rhythm of the week: there is room to be together and room to disappear.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included on retreat days, with two noted exceptions: lunch on excursion day and the free evening. The food is vegetarian, fresh and local tropical, and adaptations for vegan, gluten free and lactose free are available on request. Water with meals and juices at breakfast are included.

The beach is a few minutes on foot, and the centre of the village a few more. Most evenings you decide for yourself: dinner with the group, a walk down the main street, or the porch and an early night. Nothing here is scheduled once the day's practice ends.

Who guides the week

AMANA is guided from beginning to end by Gisella and Oriana, the two founders of Vai con (C)alma Retreats. Both left a fast, demanding life to build another one, closer to themselves and to nature, and the retreat comes out of that crossing, not out of a business idea. Gisella has spent more than twenty years following the sun, works with water sports and yoga, and knows Pipa from the inside. Oriana was a manager in China and in Barcelona before finding her holistic path, and today she works with art therapy, cacao and the creation of retreats. You are not handed to a rotating team: it is the two of them, the whole time.

Relaxed and full of energy

With Gisella, I immediately felt comfortable and I really enjoy her classes. Odaka Yoga is a beautiful and dynamic style, and I can really feel my body moving through wave-like movements. It’s a class that helps you relax while at the same time making you feel full of energy.

Silvia Serra
★★★★★
A softer body, a quieter mind

Gisella introduced me to this style of yoga, which is very fluid and dynamic. My body follows the music and her gentle voice naturally. I love the feeling of stretching and relaxation that I experience during the class. Sometimes I feel a little stiff, but then, through the circular movements, I can feel my body becoming softer and more relaxed. I especially love the relaxation at the end of the class, when I can completely switch off my mind.
